Shopee, founded in Singapore in 2015, is mainly active in Taiwan and Southeast Asia. It has already launched food delivery and payment services. The APP has recently started a taxi-hailing business Taksi in Indonesia, cooperating with local taxi company Blue Bird, for tentative.
According to KrASIA, users in some regions of Indonesia can use Shopee to book Blue Bird and ShopeePay to finish the payment from last week on. At the beginning of the business, users can enjoy cash refunding campaign.
In August this year, Blue Bird has reached a cooperation with Shopee, offering ShopeePay payment options in its app MyBlueBird, at the same time, Shopee opens an access to Blue Bird’s logistics service BirdKirim. Blue Bird is one of Indonesia's largest taxi companies. In addition to regular taxi services, it also provides services such as car rental, bus, and express delivery. In 2017, Blue Bird also cooperated with Gojek to start the Go-Blue Bird service, allowing users to book Blue Bird taxi in Gojek APP.
According to the 2021 Southeast Asia Digital Economy Report of Google, Temasek, and Bain & Company, GMV of Southeast Asia’s travel and catering industry is expected to reach $18 billion in 2021, a compound annual growth rate of 36% compared with last year. Affected by the lockdown, travel services continue to be sluggish, but they are expected to recover in 2022.
Simultaneously holding food delivery, payment services and traveling, Shopee is one step closer to super apps. In the past two years, Shopee has continued to expand its business categories. Besides its core e-commerce, Shopee also provides multiple services such as food delivery (ShopeeFood), hotel reservations (ShopeeHotel), and fresh food delivery (ShopeeSegar).
From KrASIA's view, although it is unclear whether Shopee will add a motorcycle service, considering the characters of ShopeeFood and ShopeeExpress, it is not surprising to see the new service.
Two other Southeast Asian Internet giants, GoTo and Grab, formed by the merger of Gojek and Tokopedia, have developed their own super apps. Taking Gojek as an example, the app contains multiple services such as travel (GoRide, GoCar), express (GoSend), takeaway (GoFood), shopping (GoMall), payment (GoPay), news and entertainment (GoNews, GoGames). But Shopee or its investor Donghai Group has not yet integrated a super application of the same scale.
In 2021, Shopee launched ShopeeFood in Indonesia, but did not have a reputation like Grab or Goto in the user community. According to a survey by Snapcart, a consumer services and data company, GrabFood is the most popular food delivery platform among merchants and consumers in Indonesia. 82% of the merchants surveyed have registered for GrabFood, 71% have registered for GoFood, only 28% for ShopeeFood. Moreover, 100% of users have heard of GrabFood or GoFood, more than 90% have used GrabFood or GoFood, and only 52% have heard of ShopeeFood , 35% have used ShopeeFood.
